Longtime Boys & Girls Club volunteer receives national award

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
A longtime, dedicated volunteer with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany earns a prestigious national award.
Swimming instructor Albernell King is one of 11 people nationwide to receive the 2015 Maytag Dependable Leader Award. Over 37-years,King has taught nearly 5,000 children to swim. He also was given a proclamation by the Mayor and the National Service to Youth Award from the club.
“It's just been a real passion of mine,” said Albernell King, Recipient. “I love the water and swimming is something that I can always give back to the children and teach a life skill that will stay with somebody for life."
"This is a huge honor to recognize a person that has been a committed and dedicated leader to our organization for a number of years,” said Marvin Laster, Asst. Chief Professional Officer. “It means a great deal to us.”
The club also received a $20,000 grant to create the A.B. King Learn to Swim and Water Safety Institute. It will pay for swim lessons for 100 kids per year over the next 10 years.
