ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Commodore Conyers died at his Albany home Sunday, at age 84.

He served in many capacities in public service in Albany. He was first an educator, and was the principal of Dougherty High School. He took a new job for the school board when he headed the career tech program.

Commissioner Commodore Conyers was also sworn in to the Water, Gas, and Light Board in January 2007.

He also served on the election board for Dougherty County.

May 2011, someone broke into the Shiloh Baptist Church, where Conyers was a deacon. He said of that crime, "I feel awful that someone would break into the edifice of the Lord and destroy it."

He was also a member of the Civil Rights Institute board of directors.

Meadows Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Their number is 229-439-2262.
