VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The second to last phase of sewer pipe smoke testing got underway in Valdosta Tuesday.
Tuesday, a contract crew began testing pipes along Gil Harbin Industrial Blvd. This 3rd phase of testing will cover 60 miles of pipe in the southern part of the city and was, as of Tuesday, expected to take eight weeks to complete.
The city has been working to smoke test all 300 plus miles of sewer pipes since January of 2014 as a way to identify cracks and leaks in order to help eliminate sewer overflows in the city.
"we kind of expect to see a lot of the same problems we had with the past smoke testing results," said Valdosta's Assistant Utilities Director, David Frost, explaining what the utilities departm, ent expected to find during the 3rd phase of smoke testing.
Continued Frost, "a lot of clean outs, a lot of services that could be broken."
As of Tuesday, the final phase of testing was expected to begin sometime in 2016 and cover the remaining 120 miles of pipe.
