U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, a longtime advocate of strong border security, has co-sponsored legislation that will financially penalize local and state governments

that defy federal law and become so-called "sanctuary cities" that shelter illegal immigrants and protect them from deportation.

The death of Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old woman in San Francisco, who was shot to death by illegal alien, has brought the debate over so called sanctuary cities to a new high.

We agree, So-called 'sanctuary cities' undermine the rule of law, and they are simply unacceptable.

They also make it more difficult to deport illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes. We applaud Senator Isakson's action and the State of Georgia's foresight in proactively prohibiting local governments from adopting these policies.

The defense of our nation begins with securing our borders and ending the opportunity for illegal entry. Our immigration laws must be followed, and they must be enforced. We stand in full support of those who do both.
