A Valdosta man was waiting to be sentenced Thursday after being convicted of a lesser charge in an accident that killed a man in 2014.

34 year old Deshawn Watts was convicted of misdemeanor vehicular homicide for an accident that killed 76 year old George Stripling on MLK Dr. on September 25th. The District Attorney's Office had charged Watts with felony vehicular homicide but was not surprised with the verdict.

"The defense strategy was to argue a misdemeanor vehicular homicide based on the fact that he was following too closely. So, that was a choice the jury had so it really wasn't surprising," explained Southern Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant District Attorney Brad Shealy.

Watts could face up to three years in jail, as he was convicted on additional traffic charges stemming from the accident. As of Thursday, he was scheduled to be sentenced on October 8th.
