Leesburg Bypass won't help... yet

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - The first day of school in the Lee County School System is Friday, and a traffic nightmare is about to unfold.

The Leesburg Bypass, started to alleviate a monster traffic jam in Leesburg around the courthouse, as people head to the middle and elementary schools, will ease flow of parents transporting students near Highway 195 and Old Smithville Road... In December.

Officials had hoped that it would be usable by the first day of school this year, but the road surface was changed from the original design of asphalt to concrete, and that caused about a three month delay.

Leesburg Police will be out directing traffic for the first day which usually has traffic backed up in town in front of the courthouse.
