ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The City of Albany continues work to beautify the old East Broad Avenue Underpass.
Workers are putting final touches on the project to help the railroad underpass match the new Broad Avenue bridge over the Flint River.
The centerpiece is a large mural called "Bridge the Community" painted by Cameron Malphrus.
People have been calling for this project for 60 years, and Mayor Dorothy Hubbard championed it.
Albany Director Of Engineering Bruce Maples said"It's been a point of controversy since 1955. And they just wanted something to beautify it and make it a gateway into East Albany from the west side with the Broad Avenue Bridge."
The underpass will remain closed for a few weeks to install more lighting and complete landscaping.
The opening will coincide with the opening of the new bridge which could be pushed back to late September or early October.
