Decatur prison chief steps down

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) - Decatur County Prison Warden Elijah McCoy handed in his resignation this morning.

McCoy is resigning for personal reasons, and it becomes effective tomorrow.

He had been suspended with pay for the last two weeks, during an investigation of the prison that was prompted by concerns raised by former employees and other people in the community.

Former Florida Prison Warden Ed Mercer is handling the non-criminal investigation, which is being described a fact finding probe.

McCoy has been employed with Decatur County for more than 20 years according to county administrator Alan Thomas.

The two deputy wardens will continue to run the prison until the County Commission appoints a new warden.
