THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Several homeowners are on high alert as animal control workers continue to search for a stray cat that attacked a woman.
That woman is still in the hospital following surgery Wednesday. She's also undergoing rabies treatment as a precaution.
"As soon as I saw it, I said we immediately have to get to the hospital." Bill Bowen shared pictures of his wife Susan's injuries after a stray cat mauled her leg Monday night. "I've never seen a cat do something like that."
Mrs. Bowen was reading on her screened in porch with her own cats when she saw the stray walk through the cat door. "My wife looked at it and said, 'You know you're not supposed to be in here.' She got up and walked over, opened the door, and it followed her out."
But when she turned back to walk inside, the cat attacked her, ripping at her leg. A terrible incident that has many neighbors on edge. Gary McEntire said, "My wife, if she's going to walk outside now, she takes the BB gun with her!"
Animal Control has set up several traps around the Bowen's backyard. However, they have doubts that the cat is rabid, after hearing the cat didn't show any symptoms. "The likelihood that the cat has rabies or is rabid is very unlikely," said Ed Williams.
Even though the search is still ongoing, Mrs. Bowen began rabies treatment last night. She's set to leave the hospital tomorrow. If you spot the cat, call Animal Control or 911.
