ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A special ceremony tonight honored Albany Technical College students pursuing careers in healthcare.

Hundreds of people packed the Kirkland Conference center at Albany Tech to celebrate the Summer Cappings and Pinnings for fields including nursing, Pharmacy, EMT and dental.

Pharmacy student Ayana Harpe was thrilled to earn her pharmacy pin.

“It's a pretty big day, said Harpe. “I've been working on it for about 2 years and I'm finally about to get my associates degree and sit for my certification exam so that I can work pretty much anywhere in the state or in the nation once I'm nationally certified.”

Harpe was in the dual-enrollment program and recently graduated from Albany high school.

The keynote speaker at that event tonight worked in the nursing field for 47 years. Jane Field has seen the healthcare industry change a lot.

She says today's nurses face a much heavier workload than those in years past.

“Particularly in the specialty areas and in critical care and in the emergency centers, yes, reassured Field. “The nurses are the ones that takeover and do the ordering and then the doctor will review the results.”

Field worked in hospitals for years before becoming an adjunct faculty member at Darton state College.
