County to continue discussing potential Moody Activity Zone changes

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

At their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Lowndes County Commissioners agreed to continue a debate over whether, or how, to change zoning regulations around Moody Air Force Base.

The Moody Activity Zone includes restrictions on what can be built in areas adjacent to Moody.

If buildings are built beyond a certain size in that area, for example, that could limit the types of missions that the base could carry out. The county was, as of Tuesday, wanting to potentially loosen the restrictions, but critics said that could hurt the base.

The county had been working with the base for weeks to find a compromise, but as of Tuesday one has not been reached. "I think we're probably very close. We've had conversation with the Moody personnel to look at the points that they have specified that could be of some concern," said Lowndes County Manager Joe Pritchard.

Pritchard added that with a new Wing Commander having taken command at Moody on July 23rd, the county wanted to give him ample time to review the potential changes before the county makes any decisions.
