Number of gator hunting permits increase

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The state is handing out more gator hunting permits this year.
The season runs from August 14th to October 5th.
The DNR will select one thousand lucky hunters this year, up from 850 last year.
The number of gators is going up too.

"Just the increase in the number of alligators," said Brent Howze, DNR Widlife Biologist. "We're seeing increasing trends on our alligator surveys as well as the increase in the number of people applying for alligator permits has helped increase this number

Howze says there are also new hunting zones this year for Lake George.

You can still apply for an alligator hunting permit through July 31st.
