ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An attorney for a man convicted in a federal salmonella trial is calling his recommended sentence absurd.
Court officers are recommending life in prison for former Peanut Corporation of America owner Stewart Parnell, up to 21-years for his brother, Michael Parnell, and up to 10-years for former quality assurance manager Mary Wilkerson.
Other defense attorneys are watching the sentencing closely.
"These are some very serious charges that these individuals were convicted of and they carry with them some pretty serious punishment so it'll be interesting to see the manner in which the court does use the sentencing guidelines in this case," said defense attorney Charlie Peeler.
The three were convicted on dozens of charges last September after jurors found they knowingly shipped salmonella tainted products and covered up lab results after the fact.
Sentencing is set for September 21st.
