Americus police expected to receive raise

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Americus Police officers are getting a pay raise.
Thursday city council members approved 17% increases for patrol officers, investigators, sergeants, and Lieutenants.
The Mayor says it's needed to attract and keep qualified officers.

"We just felt like in order to attract additional officers to our city we needed to increase the salaries. We just couldn't increase the base pay. We had to raise levels of all salaries in the police department. We just felt like this was the right thing and hopefully it will help us to attract more  officers and retain the officers that we currently have,” said Barry Blount, mayor.

The raises will go into effect August 14th.
