Expert: High humidity breeds stronger storms

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Recent storms in South Georgia lately seem to be more aggressive, more frequent and created more damage than this time last year.

WALB News 10's meteorologist Chris Zelman said it is mostly due to the higher humidity.

"That is creating more instability, Zelman said. "We also have some real hot conditions, so we get the heat in the afternoon and the storms pop. They've got more humidity to work with and when the storms go up in the atmosphere, they start to collapse rapidly, and the collapsing of the air creates these down bursts, and that's what creates the damaging winds."

He said there is more to come and South Georgia may be affected by a tropical storm in the near future.
