County commissioners not in favor of transit study

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

Lowndes County Commissioners were not planning on, as of Thursday, voting to approve a study to look at the possibility of a public bus system in Valdosta.

At their meeting Thursday evening, Valdosta city council was voting to approve the study but if the county doesn't also approve the study the city would have to pay for the entire study.

County commissioners said a similar study was recently done and both the the city and the county decided that a transportation system was too costly.

"Why go and do another study when you had recently done one, and if you're not willing to take the steps forward to do implementation then why waste the money to do the study," County Commission Chairman Bill Slaughter asked rhetorically.

Valdosta's mayor said the city would consider voting to pay for the study itself if county commissioners don't change their minds.
