THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - The phones are back up and running at the Thomas County Sheriff's Office after storms knocked them out Wednesday night.
Officers believe a lightning strike caused a power surge that fried their communications system.
All calls made to the Sheriff's Office during that outage were automatically transferred to the E-911 center.
"All of our incoming and outgoing calls were shut completely down," said Captain Chuck McDonald. "Also, it damaged some small equipment in the jail facility where we keep different inmates' medication and different things like that. So we're having to replace that equipment."
Captain McDonald said it has been many years since severe weather caused this significant amount of damage to the office's equipment.
