BERRIEN CO., GA (WALB) -

The American flag at the Berrien County Sheriff's Office was flying at half staff by late Tuesday morning in honor of the Marines killed in Chattanooga.

Berrien County Sheriff Anthony Heath made the decision Tuesday morning, saying as a brother and son of military veterans he felt it was the least he and his office could do.

Five Marines were killed on July 15th at a recruiting office in Chattanooga, TN after police say Mohammad Abdulazeez opened fire on the office.

"The least we could do is pay our respects by at least the honor if somebody's riding by and says, 'hey, why is your flag at half staff', simply because those people lost their lives for our freedoms," said Sheriff Heath.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Governor Deal ordered all flags at government buildings across the state to fly at half staff through July 30th.
