Decatur County school resource officers will soon be equipped with tasers, in addition to their firearms.
The school board voted 4 to 2 Thursday in favor of the new equipment.
School resource officers first brought the idea to the board about a month ago. Superintendent Dr. Fred Rayfield says the tasers will not be used in a disciplinary manner, only to handle chaotic situations without deadly force.
"It is only used to manage crisis and violent type situations where it becomes the logical next step," said Dr. Fred Rayfield, Superintendent.
Each taser will cost the board around $900.
The officers have been trained and will have the new equipment starting the first day of this coming school year.
