Officers say the man caught on surveillance video robbed the family bank in Bainbridge Thursday afternoon, stealing thousands of dollars.
"I have never seen something this bad happen in my lifetime," said Huey A. Powell. Powell has lived in Bainbridge for over 50 years, and says what happened at this Family bank yesterday afternoon sounds like a scene from a movie.
"He came in. Both of the tellers and the Vice President noticed that he was kind of lingering. One of them asked if they could help him with anything. He didn't respond and he left the bank," said Bainbridge Public Safety Investigator Chip Nix.
Employees at the bank called 911 to report this suspicious activity, Quick thinking that enabled police to identify the suspicious person as 22-year-old Ryan Harris from surveillance footage.
"From that, they made several attempts to locate Harris. That was unsuccessful," said Nix.
But just a few hours later Harris came back to the bank; this time with a plan. "When he came back in to rob it, he displayed the firearm and turned to the other teller and says, 'You two, fill the bag,'" said Nix.
The video shows the suspect taking the bag from the tellers and running out. But he didn't get but a half mile before officers spotted him. "We found the backpack with the money in it, along with the clothing and the gun that he was using," Nix said.
Officers later determined the weapon was a BB gun. Harris is now charged with armed robbery. "That bank is not the bank to rob. It's been robbed three times and we've been successful in catching and prosecuting each time so far."
Bainbridge Public Safety has been in contact with the FBI in a joint effort to pursue federal charges against Harris.
