New Bainbridge Public Safety Director is a familiar face

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) -

The city of Bainbridge has a new permanent Public Safety Director, and he is Jerry Carter, who has served the city for over 37 years.

After working his way up the ranks as a patrolman to becoming the Patrol Commander, he decided he would retire in 2014.

But after only eight months of retirement, Carter was called back in to take over command, after the department's former director Eric Miller resigned in March.

"After 37 years, you kind of get a little tired.  But I guess that eight months gave me some rest," he said.

Carter is the first African American to lead the department.
