SUMTER CO., GA (WALB) - Firefighters are better suited to face hazardous materials.
Emergency Management officials unveiled 3 new HAZMAT showers for the Americus, Leslie, and Sumter County fire departments.
The showers were constructed with grant money awarded to the county Emergency Management Agency.
"These showers will allow each of the fire departments to do a rapid decontamination if there ever is a hazardous material release," said Sumter County EMA Director Nigel Poole.
"By getting them rinsed down and removing their clothing, and rinsing again, we can remove about 90% of the chemicals on them right then," said Americus Firefighter Kenneth Burns.
The showers break down into small duffel bags and will be loaded on fire trucks.
