County commissioners hold public hearing on proposed millage rate

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County leaders heard from taxpayers concerned about a proposed property tax increase.

County commissioners hosted their second public hearing on the plan to raise the millage rate seven-tenths of a mil to 12.594.
Officials say they hate to raise taxes, but they say it's the only way to provide extra money for emergency services and raises to workers who haven't had a pay hike in years.

"With our budget as tight as it is, we needed to increase the pay for our employees,” said Lamar Hudgins, County Commission District 1. “A, they deserve it and B, many are finding jobs other places and we needed to do what we can to keep all of our employees."

The final hearing will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Room 120 of the Government Center.
