Police warn of phone scam

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Police say someone has been calling businesses in Americus, claiming to be an employee with the city.

According to a report, the caller told residents that services would be cut off immediately unless a payment was made and asks for a credit card number.

"The customer service center never calls businesses or citizens for the city of Americus asking for credit card information over the phone," said Interim Police Chief Herman Lamar. "Nor do they threaten to disconnect services for non payment."

Anyone who gets a call from someone claiming to be from the city is asked to call police.

Residents can call the Americus Police tip line at 924-4102 or criminal investigations at 924-4550.
