Lanier Co. shooting may be linked to big lottery jackpot

LANIER CO., GA (WALB) -

A Lanier County homeowner is angry at the sheriff's office, after her son was shot, which triggered an hours-long standoff. She says deputies could've have prevented it.

The shooting took place inside 19 Thigpen Circle. Alvetta Kelly says she had been telling the sheriff's office for weeks about threats against her and her son, but the sheriff's office did nothing.

Around 3:30 this morning, members of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office's Special Response Team tried to communicate with people they believed to be inside 19 Thigpen Circle, one of whom they believed may have been an active shooter.

Alveta Kelly owns the home but had been staying in a hotel for the past few nights and got a call around 4:00AM that something was going on. "I got up and come here and the street blocked with polices and ambulances and stuff," she said.

The standoff was triggered about an hour and a half earlier when Lanier County sheriff's deputies responded to the home for a report of shots fired. Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton refused to release much more than that, but did say that when the deputies arrived they continued to hear shots coming from inside the home.

Kelly says she believes someone may have been trying to kill her and her son because of the five million dollar lottery jackpot he won in March.  Her son, 23 year-old Eddie Flournah, Junior,  was shot in the home, and was taken to SGMC in Valdosta for treatment.

"We been having threats and stuff at the house and I went to Lanier County Sheriff several times. I gave him the screen shots and everything of what's going on. I got brushed off to the side. They said it was freedom of speech."

Kelly says over the past three weeks, someone posted her address on Facebook and said they would pay to have her and her son killed. That's why she has been staying in a hotel.

She says the Lanier County Sheriff's Office could've prevented this. "I've been reporting stuff, I've been taking screen shots. This could've been avoided a while back."

At last check, Flournah was listed in fair condition at SGMC. Kelly says there were other family members in the house at the time of the shooting but she didn't know their status and we have not been able to get that information from law enforcement.

So far, there is no word on any arrests but the sheriff's office does have several people that they are questioning.
