Celebration of life planned for fallen Valdosta vet
VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -
The Valdosta community was planning Thursday to come together to honor a soldier who committed suicide on the 4th of July after fireworks triggered his PTSD.
David Michael "Mikey" Kreft was going to school at Valdosta State and was a former VSU football player. His roommates and former teammates organized a celebration of life for Friday in the VSU P.E. complex.
One of Kreft's former coaches, Marty Michgin, said they want people to remember Kreft as more than just a football player. "More importantly, he was a combat vet who fought for their freedom and that's what they love him for. That's what we're celebrating tomorrow, not just that he played for us. We were just privileged enough to have him here," Michgin emphasized.
The celebration was scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and was open to the public.
