THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) -

A Pelham man is out of jail on bond after investigators said he scammed several people out of thousands of dollars. Yancey Howell surrendered at the Thomas county Sheriff's Office Tuesday.

Investigators spent months investigating insurance fraud where Howell worked in Meigs, after clients claimed they didn't receive coverage they paid for.

Investigators say Howell was working at Hickey Insurance Agency when he used clients checks for personal expenses around April of this year. Howell in fact bought the Hickey Agency in June of 2013 and changed the name to Hickey Insurance Services.

Derwood Hickey, and his son Barry, took back the insurance business last month, and have changed the name to B & D Insurance Agency.

Lieutenant Tim Watkins said Howell was using his clients' checks for personal expenses.

“We think that there may be more out there. That's why we want to make sure everyone is made aware of what was going on with that insurance agency up in Meigs. And if there's anyone that's still outstanding, contact our office.”

Other potential victims are urged to call the Sheriff's office at 229-225-3315.
