Running man charged with stealing Albany electricity

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Police were called to a neighborhood on South Street, near Mitchell Avenue, off Radium Springs Road, by residents who reported a man acting suspiciously.

Witnesses say the man was talking to a resident, and tried to get in the man's house, when officers arrived. They say he took off running into a wooded area, and officers followed. Officers caught him, and he went to the ground, yelling that he was in pain.

They called EMS, which responded to examine the man. They took him away for further treatment.

It turns out that the man, Anthony James Cannon, age 35, was arrested, and charged with, Meter Tampering, Obstruction of an Officer, and Criminal Trespass.

An officer with the Albany-Dougherty Marshal's office responded to 805 South Street in reference to a follow-up on an audit control complaint. The officer removed the electric meter and noticed an electrical cord running from the residence into a tent.

He attempted to make contact with the person inside, but no one responded.  The Officer then saw Cannon come out of the tent, and take off running to a home in the 300 block of Mitchell Avenue, but he was run off by the resident and his dog.

APD says the chase continued to the 900 block of South Street and into a wooded area. At some point, the suspect fell. The officer was able to restrain him and call for assistance.

Cannon is now in jail
