ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police continue to interview witnesses to a murder last night on a downtown Albany street.

44-year-old James Hawkins was shot multiple times about 10:15 last night in the 400 block of West Highland Avenue.  Hawkins was found lying on the sidewalk beside a motel fence, and died later at the hospital.

Prosecutors say that street is known for prostitution and drug trafficking, but police are getting help with their investigation.

"There are some eyewitnesses, some reported eyewitnesses to the situation.  They have been met, and they have provided information.  So the investigation is ongoing," Greg Edwards, Dougherty D.A.

James Hawkins' family members posted on facebook that he was the victim of a "random robbery, homicide."

His family has started a go fund me page asking for donations to pay for his funeral.
