Armed robber misses Albany store clerk with four shots

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Police say a gunman fired four shots inside a store during a robbery, but thankfully didn't hit anyone.

It happened inside the A&D Food Store on North Maple Street Tuesday night.

Albany Police officers said there were six customers and two clerks inside the store, and two more customers outside when the gunman started firing wildly.

The store owner said it was a miracle that no one was hurt.

A gunman, apparently wearing a wig as a disguise, rushed into the store on North Maple about 7:45 Tuesday night, wildly pointing a revolver.

"I think soon as he walked in, he said give it up.  But he just, I think he just started shooting after that," recalled A & D Owner Andy Patel.

Surveillance video shows the gunman cock the revolver, and it goes off. Then he starts shooting at the clerk, 19-year-old Drew Patel.

Patel dodged and weaved as the gunman fired over and around the counter, then ran out of the store.

One of the bullets went through a lottery ticket. Another bullet struck a large roll of lottery paper.  One of them continued into the cabinet.  Another bullet went through the front window.

One of the bullets went through the shirt that the 19-year-old clerk was wearing, but somehow did not hit the freshman Albany State student.

His uncle says Drew Patel is taking a few days away from the store.

"He's doing pretty good. He's only 19 years old. Never experienced anything like this in his life, said Patel. "He's all right, right now. But he's getting better."

The Patel family has run the store since 1989, and has never had violence like this in their business.

Police say the gunman got in a Silver Chrysler Pacifica with a Carl Gregory 'drive-out' tag, with three or four other men inside, and drove away.
