What to do if you can't afford to take care of your pet anymore

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

If you live in Lowndes County, you have options when it comes to what to do with your pet if you can't afford to take care of it anymore.

"There are options with the [animal] shelter, you can turn your animal in to the shelter. There are also rescues that can be coordinated locally or across the country,"' explained Lowndes County Clerk Paige Dukes.

A dog was found dead in the back yard of a home in the 2100 block of Troup St. in Valdosta Monday and investigators determined that it was left there tethered to a wall without any noticeable food or water since the homeowners moved out about a week prior.

Dukes said the best thing to do for a pet that you can no longer care for is to call animal welfare at (229) 671-2760.

"They can provide assistance right away," said Dukes. "They can even come and pick up an animal if you don't have a way to transport it. We certainly would rather you do that than abandon [your pet]."

As of Wednesday, animal cruelty charges were pending against the homeowners as the investigation into the dog's death continued.
