VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)
A Valdosta man was behind bars Wednesday morning after police said they caught him in the act of burglarizing a church.
Police said 26 year old Carlos Roberts was coming out of the church at 230 S. Fry St. around 2 a.m. Wednesday when officers arrived to investigate a report of a suspicious person in the church.
According to police, Roberts ran but didn't get far and was arrested without incident. Wednesday, two members from a Lowndes County church volunteered to replace the door that was damaged during the break-in.
"I knew Pastor Lundy from years back. I preached for him many times. When he called me and told me he had an emergency situation, I was glad to come lend assistance," said Bishop Harry L. Campbell, as he stood next to the door he and his associate pastor were preparing to install in the church.
Money and money bags were stolen from the church, but as of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday had not been located. VPD officers were on scene around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday searching the area around the church.
As of Wednesday morning, charges of burglary, obstruction, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime were pending against Roberts.
