DNR talks swim safety

LAKE BLACKSHEAR, GA (WALB) - The Department of Natural Resources wants folks to be safe while swimming out at Lake Blackshear this summer.

They say its important to swim only in designated swim areas, and always swim with a buddy.

This weekend 28-year-old Deshrick Howard drowned while swimming near the beach area.

The DNR says he went outside the designated swim area, and went under while trying to swim back.

They say its important to know your strength.

“You need to know what the depth of the water is, and you need to above all know what your capabilities are, you have to understand when you swim out into the lake you have to have enough strength and ability to swim back in," says Corporal Bob Holley.

He also says never leave kids unsupervised.
