A prom for people with disabilities was underway at Mathis City Auditorium in Valdosta as of 6 p.m. Friday.

The Valdosta Lowndes Parks and Rec Authority spent most of the day decorating and getting everything ready. The theme of the prom was "The Wild West".

The VLPRA said this is one of their biggest and most exciting events of the year.

"We wanted something special, something formal, and a lot of our individuals maybe never got the chance to go to a prom when they were in high school. So, this is their opportunity to get dressed up, go to a formal event, and have that experience," VLPRA Marketing Coordinator Jessica Catlett.

The prom was scheduled to run until 9 p.m. and was open to anyone with disabilities.
