Brooks Co. man guilty of involuntary manslaughter, agg. assault

Superior Court Judge Richard M. Cowart Superior Court Judge Richard M. Cowart
QUITMAN, GA (WALB) -

A Brooks County man was awaiting sentencing as of Friday, after being found guilty of killing a man in 2014.

A jury convicted Quinton Childs of involuntary manslaughter Wednesday for hitting and killing Daniel Sutton with a car during a New Year's party on January 1st, 2014.

Childs was also convicted on two counts of aggravated assault for hitting Daniel Sutton's son, Matthew Sutton, with the car and for pointing a shotgun at someone else at the party.

Even though prosecutors were pursuing a felony murder charge and three counts of aggravated assault, they were happy with the verdict.

"Most certainly, this is a win for our office," said Southern Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant District Attorney Brad Shealy. "We think that based on the facts of the case that the verdict is a fair verdict and it certainly is one that gives the victim justice based on the facts of the case."

As of Friday morning, a sentencing date had not been set.
