COFFEE CO., GA (WALB) - The Coffee County Sheriff was trying Thursday to make residents aware of a debit card scam that had started popping up in the county.
Sheriff Doyle Wooten said several residents had recently gotten calls saying their debit card had been canceled and they needed to provide their PIN number to reactivate it.
He said his investigators had tried to trace the phone numbers, but they hadn't had any luck, which he said may be thanks to an app that can be used to produce a fake number for the caller when they call you.
"That's a technology available for a criminal now, so they're usin' it. They learn quick, so it's almost impossible," Sheriff Wooten emphasized.
If you get a call like this, Sheriff Wooten said do not give any information to the caller and call your bank immediately to find out if your card has, in fact, been deactivated.
