BACONTON, GA (WALB) - A Baconton church provided food for dozens of people in need Wednesday afternoon.
Some families showed up hours before the giveaway began.
St. James Missionary Baptist Church is no stranger to helping those in need. Members said this time of year is even more crucial.
Lots of Thank You's Wednesday night at St. James Missionary Baptist church as peopled loaded up boxes with food to take home for the summer. George Smith waited for hours in the Sanctuary to hear his name called.
" It's nice for the church to do this," said George Smith, Member of Church.
The Giveaway was scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., but many people eager to take home a meal showed up hours earlier.
"When I pulled about 2:45 p.m. one lady said she had been here since 1p.m., so he immediately let them in the church," said Patrice Dawson, Member of Church.
People filled their boxes and bags with juices desserts and breads. Several people brought their children and members said it's important to make sure children have meals this time of year.
" Our Pastor decided he would like to give a food giveaway back to the community and it's really important this time of the year because the kids are out for the Summer and we won't have to wonder about whether they're having a good snack or not," continued Dawson.
Food giveaways have been part of the church's mission for more than five years. This year, they're working with Second Harvest Food Bank. It's a mission that George Smith appreciates.
" It helps me out a lot by getting this on the side you know," said George Smith.
"It really makes me fill good. It's especially important for our church to give back to the community. My pastor is big on helping not just for this event but he's trying to do stuff all the time for the people in our community," said Patrice Dawson.
St. James Missionary Baptist Church handed out food to nearly 70 people this afternoon. Their next food giveaway is in two weeks.
