Colquitt Co. home destroyed by fire

COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) - A Colquitt County man had his vacation cut short by a fire that destroyed his home.

McKenna Fletcher was awakened by flames early this morning when she discovered her neighbor's home on Jerusalem Church Road in Colquitt County was on fire. "You could just see the inside of that house just looked like a lighting bolt. I mean it was awful"

After calling 911, Fletcher then worried about whether her neighbor. "Immediately just really, really scared for just if someone was in the house."

Fortunately her neighbor was out of town on vacation. It was Fletcher who had to call him and tell him the awful news that his home was all but gone.

Six different Colquitt County Volunteer Fire Departments did everything they could to save this house.

"You know there wasn't a lot we could do. We kind of at a lost when we can't go inside and save someone's home," said Herbert Denton Culbertson Volunteer Fire Department.

Fletcher said even though the house is a total loss she admires the job the 25 fire fighters did.

"I believe the fire fighters and the first responders did amazing, they were on scene within 10 minutes."

Right now the home owner is just trying to find out what next.
