VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta Fire Department had begun accepting applications Wednesday for its 2nd annual Citizens Fire Academy.
As of Wednesday, the course was scheduled to begin September 8th and run through the end of October. Class meets every Tuesday during that time and is designed to give citizens a crash course in being a firefighter.
Valdosta Fire Department Sgt. Chris Staples said it helps people understand that firefighters do more than just put out fires and it also helps with fire prevention.
"I think it did something toward that, yeah. But, it also lets them know the different aspects that we have because we don't just put out fires," Sgt. Staples pointed out.
The deadline to apply is July 31st and the department is expecting the class to fill up quickly. For more information about the class or to sign up, call (229) 333-1835 or visit http://www.valdostacity.com/fire.
