New and improved bridge opens at the Georgia-Florida line

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

A new bridge was open as of Wednesday evening at the Georgia-Florida state line at the Brooks-Lowndes County line.

Wednesday, GDOT shifted the traffic lanes on Hwy. 31 to allow traffic to start using the bridge. The new bridge replaces the bridge that had been in place there for around 60 years.

The new bridge took around two years to complete and cost approximately $5.5 million. It has 12 ft. wide driving lanes and 8 ft. emergency lanes.

But, GDOT said even though the bridge was being opened to traffic there was still some work to be done as of Wednesday. "There is a boat ramp road that will be paved, they will have to work on the shoulders and also removal of the old bridge," explained GDOT Communication Officer Jill Nagel.

As of Wednesday, the bridge was expected to be completely finished in September.
