Candlelight vigil held for Malik Sparkman

COFFEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Family and friends gathered tonight to remember the life of a Douglas teen.

A candlelight vigil was held for 18 year-old Malik Sparkman, who lost a hard fought battle with kidney cancer last month.

The standout linebacker for the Coffee County Trojans was a fighter on and off the field and became an inspiration to many.

Malik's family says they appreciate all of the support from the community.

"I'm surprised, a lot of people came out, the whole town and surrounding counties came out to support and do all that they can for the last 11 months we've been going through this and they've been very supportive for me and family,” said Keith Sparkman, Malik's Father.

A scholarship fund has been started to keep his legacy alive.

You can donate by making checks out to the Malik Sparkman Scholarship Fund.
