Lt. fire chief's mother escapes blaze

ASHBURN, GA (WALB) - The Lieutenant Fire Chief of the Ashburn Fire Department is happy his mother is alive tonight after a fire consumed the area where she was sleeping.

Early in the morning Lt. Fire Chief Daren Gipson heard the call of a fire at his mothers house.

She was able to drag herself out of the fire and over to her daughter's house next door.

Gipson said she heard the voice of her dead husband, and that alarmed her.

"She said my dad woke her up and told her that the house was on fire, you better get out," recalled Gipson.

The home is located where he and his family grew up. The family plans to rebuild.
