VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Valdosta Police Department was trying Thursday to do more to connect with young kids in the community.

Officers had, as of Thursday, organized a five on five basketball game between themselves and some high school students at the boys and girls club in Valdosta.

Valdosta Police Officer Vernotis Williams was coordinating the event and said this game will help send an important message to the teens and to the community.

"The ultimate message that's gonna be sent is, we can work with you," Officer Williams emphasized. "Whether it's havin' fun or workin' against crime in your neighborhood, contact us. We're human just like you are. Just contact us and we'll work with you."

As of Thursday, the basketball game was scheduled to be held at the teen center at 614 Toombs St. on June 24th at 4 p.m.
