CORDELE, GA (WALB) - A Cordele community group continues to fight to keep the Department of Labor Office open.
The career center on 7th Street is scheduled to close Friday. State leaders announced it will merge with the Americus office, saving nearly $200,000 a year.
State Representative Buddy Harden is meeting with the Labor commissioner today to try to find an alternative.
"Hoping for a divine intervention that they will keep this labor department here to serve and meet the needs of this community which is poverty stricken. We're in dire need of labor department to stay here," said Carolyn Hemby of My Brother's Keeper.
The organization also offered a privately owned building on 16th avenue to the state for a new office, but no decision has been made.
