VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department was looking forward Thursday to getting three or four new canine officers.

The proposed budget for the 2016 fiscal year included, as of Thursday, money to purchase the dogs. Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress said they needed the new dogs because they recently lost one dog to cancer and their other two had gotten old and needed to be retired.

"We explained to the city, 'hey it's time for us to replace a lot of these animals. Our goal is to have one dog on each shift and to have one in narcotics and maybe even a floater. So, that will get us there," Chief Childress explained.

The Valdosta City Council was, as of Thursday, expected to vote on the budget June 25th.

Chief Childress hopped to have the dogs ready to start working by September.
