CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Community leaders are fired up about a the closure of a career center office, after the Department of Labor announced that the Cordele location would be merged into the Americus center.

A group of citizens had an organized protest Friday, in an effort to keep the Cordele center open.

"It is our civic responsibility to stand up and represent this community. This entire community, not just the westside, but just the entire community," said Carolyn Hemby of My Brother's Keeper.

Hemby and others in Cordele have written letters to their representatives and state senator in an effort to keep this place open. Right now, it's set to close a week from today.

The department of labor tells us they are committed to making the closure of this office as smooth as possible for residents.
