BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) - The Shaw carpet plant 70 at  200 Industrial Boulevard in Bainbridge will have layoffs.

Bainbridge city officials were notified by Shaw that starting today there will be layoffs, and they will impact up to 267 employees at the plant.

Rick McCaskill of Industrial Development Authority of Bainbridge and Decatur County says the county was hit hard by this news at lunchtime.

He says company is notifying employees that the layoffs will actually begin October 15th.

Shaw has two plants in Bainbridge. McCaskill doesn't know how many people are employed at Shaw but believes 267 is a bulk of their workforce in the community.

He says city and county leaders are already working on developing ways to help workers who are soon to be out of a job.

One step is to notify some new and incoming businesses that there will soon be a large force of trained workers available.
