DECATUR CO., GA (WALB) - A Florida man is being called an angel after he saved a woman from her burning home.
Rosa Williams said she's still in shock to see her house, which she built from the ground up, destroyed.
"When I walk through and see the rubble, oh my God," she said.
Yesterday afternoon, Williams said it felt cool outside and as worried about keeping her 20 new baby chicks warm.
“I said, ‘Well let me turn the light on, the heater on, for the baby chicks. And I'm only going to do it for an hour,'” said Williams.
Within that hour, she went to take a nap, only to be woken up by the smell of smoke.
Decatur County Fire and Rescue Chief Charlie McCann said, “It started on this back porch area and then it got into the roof line of the house. Then it worked its way across, inside to the whole house.”
“When I came out of the front bedroom and I looked on the front porch, all I saw was flames. And I was in shock like, 'What is going on?'” Williams said.
The next thing Williams remembered was hearing a man banging down her front door, yelling for her to get out.
“He spotted the smoke a mile down the road,” she said.
A stranger named Anthony Patterson was traveling from Florida and decided to take the back roads, and Williams said she was lucky he did.
“I was relieved that he did see it when he did and was able to get her out. We probably would have had a whole different outcome if he hadn't noticed it,” said Chief McCann
Williams said, while she lost almost everything she had, she's grateful to be alive.
“He saved my life,” she said. “He was an angel, truly an angel sent by God.”
We couldn't track down Patterson.
The Salvation Army and Red Cross are now helping Williams relocate.
