Alert citizen helps catch hotel robbery suspects

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Sunday night about 10:15, Valdosta Police officers responded to a possible robbery call at the Quality Inn, on Gornto Road.

The night clerk said while he was checking the pool area, an armed man dressed in dark clothing and hoodie told him to get on the ground. The gunman went behind the counter and took money from the cash drawer and ran off.

The motel clerk said he received a shock from a stun gun.

An employee from a nearby business alerted police that the suspects may be in the area of his business. "We had a citizen that was workin' at a nearby business, saw somethin' suspicious actually, out back of the business. Two guys comin' around there takin' their clothes off. So, they went ahead and called 911," said VPD Cpt. Bobbi McGraw.

Officers canvassing the area soon located the men at the Rodeway Inn, sitting on a curb, and arrested them without incident. Evidence links them to the incident at the Quality Inn, police say.

Tevin Fitchett, 22, and Shamari Pigford, 19, both Valdosta residents, have been arrested and charged with False Imprisonment, Simple Assault, and Theft by Taking. Pigford is charged with Party to the Crime on all three charges.

VPD says that Fitchett was an employee of the Rodeway Inn, and is the person who confronted the clerk and took the money.

Anyone having any information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Valdosta Police Department at 229-293-3145 or the Crime Tip Line at 229-293-3091.
