ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Albany and Dougherty County leaders, family, and friends came out to celebrate Chief John Proctor's retirement.

Several people gave remarks, shared memories and wished Chief Proctor and his family well.

Proctor, who's spent six years leading the Albany Police Department, said he'll miss the entire community.

He's worked to make a difference and hopes the community continues to move forward.

"I hope I leave behind a more stable police department, a more stable police force, a more stable and connected police force. And a reconnection and bond to this community." Chief Proctor said.

The 59-year old plans to relax and spend time with his family.

Veteran Albany Police officer Michael Persley is the new chief.
